The Elements Journal

A boutique publication for lovers of the ocean and the land, made by creatives in Margaret River.

The Elements Journal was created by Sarah Robinson (me) and Paris Hawken, under the Elements Margaret River brand. As Editor, I worked with our Art Director Paris to come up with concepts and themes for each issue.

Pieces included stories about local surfers, artists, musicians and sustainable farmers who focus their lives on doing what they love. I wrote many pieces for the Journal, and edited the work of other writers, who contributed to the publication.

The Journal ran for two issues, with funding from local businesses who paid for advertising space. We made a point of curating ad space with an editorial feel, so readers were not jolted out of their read with ads that did not align with the Journal’s aesthetic.

Incredible photographers, including Mark Boskell, Russell Ord, Gordon Becker, Rae Marie, Chris Gurney and of course, Paris Hawken, are published in the Journal. Our writing team included Erin Molloy, Tom DeSouza, Anthony Pancia and Ashleigh Harris.

We also featured the artwork of Chloe Wilder, Joel Ebsworth, Penny Hepburn and other amazing creatives. Paris and I wanted to create a publication made by locals, which represented the down-to-earth lifestyle loved and lived by people in the community. The Journal was (and still is) sold in many locations Down South.

Creating this publication was one of the highlights of my time in Margaret River. Click on the images below to read excerpts.
